AN INTERVIEW WITH MELINDA POWERS

Business Attorney

What do you do at The Legal Department?
I work alongside Laurie to provide our business clients with the expertise, guidance, and insight they need to maximize their success. In this role, I have the unique opportunity to combine my prior experience in entrepreneurship, small business consulting, and law which equips me with a connection to all aspects of our client’s issues. I also enjoy being able to share my non-traditional ideas with my colleagues.

What do you like most about what you do?
I love that I am able to bring the entirety of my experience to this role. Naturally, I am actively learning, reading, and finding patterns and connections in my environment. Working for a firm that is innovative is very refreshing because the legal profession is known for the late adoption of technology and change, in general.

Who are your favorite clients to work with?
Business professionals who understand that to create a successful entity, a team is required. Inevitably, attorneys are an integral part of that team whether an owner is just getting started or defending the entity’s rights after many years. Attorneys are also wonderful advisors to have at every stage of the small business journey and business professionals that accept and embrace that idea are usually very pleasant to work with.

What is special or unique about helping professional service providers?
Professional service providers are the backbone of our communities. They take care of our various needs and are accessible, but they are also our neighbors, colleagues, and friends. Being able to help the providers that help keep our community viable is highly rewarding and ultimately very inspiring.

What are two words your friends would use to describe you?
Intelligent. Observant.
